NEW LIFE Coronation Street icon quits cobbles after 25 years as she makes life changing decision

After a remarkable 25-year journey on the cobbles of Coronation Street, Eileen Grimshaw has said an emotional goodbye to Weatherfield—and fans everywhere are feeling the weight of her departure. Played by the ever-talented Sue Cleaver since 2000, Eileen’s exit marks the end of an era on the ITV soap as she trades rainy Manchester for the sunshine of Thailand.

Friday’s episode delivered a deeply heartfelt farewell as Eileen made the life-changing decision to leave the street behind and join her son Jason (Ryan Thomas) in Thailand. With plans to invest in his bar and make a fresh start, it was a decision that didn’t come lightly—but one that felt long overdue. Having weathered decades of drama, heartbreak, and more than her fair share of chaotic love affairs, Eileen finally reached a breaking point after being wrongfully suspected in her sister Julie’s tragic death.

Eileen’s departure also meant closing the chapter on her romance with undertaker George Shuttleworth. Despite their connection, Eileen tearfully confessed she didn’t love him in the way he deserved—calling him instead a “dear friend.” Their goodbye was tender and mature, with George gifting her a neck pillow for the flight and promising to stay in touch.

What made Eileen’s send-off even more touching was the impromptu farewell organised by her longtime friends Steve McDonald and Tim Metcalfe. The Street Cars drivers pulled out all the stops, decorating their taxis with ribbons and lining the street for one final salute. The Rovers Return played host to one last round of drinks, where Eileen was met with cheers, hugs, and tears. “Never knowingly understated, lads,” she quipped, her signature wit on full display.Coronation Street icon quits cobbles after 25 years as she makes life changing decision | The Sun

Steve, visibly emotional, told her: “It’s only just hit me that this has been one of the most important relationships of my life.” Promising to visit her in Thailand, his words reflected the deep, platonic bond that has long made Eileen a staple of Weatherfield’s heart.

Her son Todd also offered his support, telling her: “You deserve this, Mum.” With those parting words, Eileen climbed into the cab beside Jason, waving goodbye to the people and the place that had defined her life for a quarter of a century.

While fans are sad to see her go, Sue Cleaver’s reasons are inspiring. At 60, she’s embracing change and chasing new opportunities. She’s set to appear more frequently as a panellist on Loose Women and is exploring further stage roles after her recent success in Sister Act: The Musical. She also wowed audiences on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and recently published her memoir A Work in Progress.

Though the door has been left open for a possible return, for now, Eileen’s journey is one of self-discovery, renewal, and living fearlessly. Weatherfield won’t be the same without her—but her legacy is firmly cemented in Coronation Street history.
