Why Sheridan’s rural-themed, family feud dramas dominate streaming but fail to catch Emmy voters’ major category attention year after year.
The Emmys 2025 just delivered a brutal reality check to Taylor Sheridan. Not one major nomination for Yellowstone, 1923, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and Landman – nothing. And here’s the thing, it’s not like people aren’t watching these shows. In fact, these shows are crushing ratings as well as the viewership numbers. But we might be watching the MCU fatigue effect play out in Sheridan’s vast neo-western universe.
That’s right, Marvel or the superhero genre in general overloaded fans with back-to-back projects and way too many characters, something that the Yellowstone creator has also been doing the last couple of years. Spinoff after spinoff, and prequel stacked on prequel. Six dramas in one franchise, all running close together, that too with the same tone. So, no matter how big his empire gets, they fail to bag big awards. Let’s see why.
Like the MCU, Taylor Sheridan’s TV Empire Can’t Win Awards No Matter How Big It Gets
Taylor Sheridan might be the hardest-working guy on television right now, but Emmy voters clearly didn’t get the memo. Not a single major nomination for Yellowstone, 1923, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, or Lioness in 2025. And yes, it definitely stings as these shows are currently dominating the streaming game.
Even for the cast, we have the iconic Sylvester Stallone for Tulsa King and Billy Bob Thornton leading Landman with his brilliant acting chops. But when it comes to the Emmys, nothing. This isn’t just a one-time snub; in fact, for seven years straight, the Emmys have pretended that the Sheridan-verse doesn’t exist beyond a few nods for stunt work and costumes.
This is starting to echo the old Marvel fatigue, too many shows, that too of the same genre and tone. Marvel dropped over a dozen series in a few years, like Moon Knight, Loki, Ms. Marvel, the list goes on, stacked right on top of theatrical releases. And for a while, it worked. But by 2024, people were exhausted, with the same story but in different shows.Related

Sheridan’s universe might be running into the same wall with the same high-stakes family feud, same dusty theme, and familiar settings. On the other hand, shows like Severance, The White Lotus, and The Penguin are racking up nominations by being sharp and different in their approach.
So, millions might watch Sheridan’s shows, but if he really wants to turn Emmys into part of his legacy, it might be time to shake up the formula or at least take a breath.
Why the Emmys Still Don’t Take Taylor Sheridan Seriously

Taylor Sheridan is building an empire in real time. The man writes like he’s running out of time, and somehow the Emmys act like he doesn’t even exist. So, what’s actually going on? For starters, Sheridan’s storytelling tone and style don’t fit the usual Emmy mold. His work is deeply centered around ranchers, oil workers, sheriffs, and soldiers. And that’s the problem.

The Emmys love bold visuals and high-concept storytelling. So, something like Severance or The White Lotus would be a big hit in the nominations, as they were this year. Yes, the Adam Scott starrer received 27 nominations, the highest of any series, and on the other hand Mike White’s show earned 23 nominations.
Plus, let’s also talk about quantity. Sheridan is making a lot of television. At any given moment, he’s got three shows airing and two more in development. And while fans love it, critics are starting to get fatigued. Then there’s the politics that also don’t work in his favor. He’s not exactly Hollywood’s best friend and has had very public fallouts, most notably with Kevin Costner.
So, what would it take for him to break through? At this point, nothing, as he’s not at all focused on winning awards. For him, it’s the storytelling and the creativity that hold much bigger value than winning some award. And maybe for him that’s the legacy that matters more.
