Coronation Street is in the throes of wedding season, with Dev Alahan and Bernie Winter preparing to exchange vows in a grand ceremony. However, as regular viewers of this enduring ITV drama will attest, bliss seldom comes without complications in soapland.

Dev, portrayed by Jimmi Harkishin, has been a resident of the Cobbles since 1999 and was previously married to Sunita Alahan, played by Shobna Gulati, in 2004. Tragically, she was killed off in 2013, having survived the Rover’s fire only to be murdered by arsonist Karl Munro, enacted by John Michie.

Fans are likely hoping for a more joyous second marriage for Dev. He is due to marry Bernie, brought to life by Jane Hazlegrove, in scenes set to air next week. The couple have been romantically involved on-screen since September of the previous year, growing closer following the death of Bernie’s son, Paul.

Despite a brief separation, the pair are set to become man and wife – provided they can navigate a series of dramatic events. Stag do antics, a break-in, an unexpected proposal, a sudden collapse, and a hospital trip mid-ceremony all threaten to disrupt their nuptial plans, reports the Mirror.

Viewers tuning in at the start of the week will witness Dev and Bernie savouring their final moments of singlehood as they revel in their stag and hen parties. However, Bernie is less than thrilled when she discovers that Dev and his mates have invited a pole dancer to join them at the Rovers.

With the ceremony scheduled to feature in Wednesday’s episode, challenges await the couple as several guests become unwell and must observe proceedings through a live stream.

Bernie’s feelings become overwhelming when she realises she’s forgotten her treasured locket containing a photograph of her deceased son, Paul – and catastrophe ensues when she rushes home to collect it, only to discover an intruder in her property.

Whilst the special day should focus entirely on Dev and Bernie, Debbie Webster manages to capture some spotlight for herself by dropping to one knee to propose to Ronnie. Viewers must remain patient to discover whether Bernie actually reaches the altar – as she suddenly collapses before Dev, leaving him terrified for his bride’s wellbeing.

The Corrie ensemble have been sharing thoughts about all the peaks and valleys of the wedding day arrangements. Bernie actress Jane, 57, chuckles: “The day goes from bad to worse!”.

“That’s what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don’t know what you’re going to get until you open the page of the script and that’s what is so fantastic about how it plays out – we’ve got this woman raving down the aisle and the next minute she’s collapsed and an ambulance is on its way!”.

Jane also disclosed that she contributed to the creation of Bernie’s wedding gown. She explained: “I knew that Bernie wouldn’t go down the road of wearing a traditional dress. I had seen some old footage of Elkie Brookes on TV and she was wearing a kaftan.

“I am a big fan of Elkie so that was the initial inspiration, but this is for Bernie so it needed to be a bit extra. Our fantastic talented costume department came up with the 1970s style white dress that is a bit Elkie Brookes, a bit Demis Roussos and very Bernie Winter.”

Viewers can catch all the unfolding drama as Coronation Street broadcasts this week on ITV1 and via ITVX on Monday at 8pm, Wednesday at 8pm, and Friday at 8pm.
