Emmerdale’s Oliver Farnworth promises new twists in dramatic John Sugden climax

Emmerdale star Oliver Farnworth has promised further twists as the storyline involving John Sugden approaches its climax.

The drama has been consistent on the ITV soap in recent weeks, with the deadly doctor taking Mackenzie Boyd hostage in a bid to conceal his various crimes. Things escalated considerably when Aaron discovered the hidden bunker, leading to all hell breaking loose.

Through a variety of circumstances, Robert confronted John as he sought to protect Aaron. However, the villain was one step ahead as he framed his half-brother for attempted murder after John took himself and Aaron over the edge of a gorge.

Thursday’s (11 September) instalment saw Robert charged with the crime as he couldn’t convince authorities that he was innocent. Later, John issued his most sinister threat yet as he made it clear he would kill Aaron in order to escape justice.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com following Wednesday’s National Television Awards, Farnworth, who debuted as John in August 2024, said that more drama is to come in the ever-changing storyline.

“It wouldn’t be Emmerdale without a few twists and turns, would it?” teased the actor, who previously played Andy Carver in Coronation Street. “So I’d say, just when you think something’s gonna go one way, it can always go another.”

Farnworth also explained that, while his character does indeed love Aaron, his traumatic past has caused him problems down the line when it comes to relationships, with the actor calling his character “possessive” and “dangerous”.

While John is attempting to get away with murder (literally), Charity is growing increasingly bitter at the sudden disappearance of her husband Mack, with actor Emma Atkins recently outlining her character’s state of mind.

“Charity’s so angry, she’s very defiant,” said Atkins. “She’s not stopped to really wonder why he’s gone missing; she just feels, ‘Right, crack on. This could be the end of our marriage.’ So, in her head, she’s resilient.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
