Trying to carry on an illicit affair in the middle of Coronation Street isn’t easy when you’re surrounded by twitching curtains, prying eyes and Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).
So when Abi Webster (Sally Carman) comes up with the idea of fleeing Weatherfield with lover Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), it would seem like a good idea.
Carl and Abi recently progressed from merely panting with lust at the sight of each other to afternoons of actual lust at the Chariot Square Hotel.
Abi had been holding back from giving in to her feelings for her husband’s younger brother because… well, basically he’s her husband’s younger brother.
Since then there have been numerous secret meetings, but not secret enough to escape the attention of Tracy, who’s been blackmailing them because she has a divorce to finance.
Kevin still doesn’t know that Carl and Abi are having a relationship, so when he gets the news that he’s cancer free, he’s overjoyed and his mind turns to the future. He pictures growing old together with Abi, perhaps spending their retirement doing up old cars. Such bliss.
Abi doesn’t share this vision of utopia. In fact it sounds like just about the worst thing she can think of, and she finally braces herself to tell Kevin that their marriage is over.
She heads off to see Carl, relieved that now they can finally be together without secrecy. Obviously it’s not going to be easy to stay around in Coronation Street, as most people will definitely be on Team Kevin when they find out what’s been going on.

So Abi proposes a plan. She tells Carl they should run away together and start a new life, far away from the cobbles and the garage and seeing Kevin’s sad little face every time they venture into the Rovers.
