The actor was recently nominate for a National Television Award for his portrayal of David Platt in the ITV soap
Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has responded to claims he was ‘fuming’ after missing out on a recent award to a rival EastEnders star.
The actor was recently nominate for a National Television Award for his portrayal of David Platt in the ITV soap. He was shortlisted at the 2025 ceremony, which took place earlier this month, in the serial drama performance category.
Jack was up against his Corrie co-star Sue Devaney, who is best known for playing Debbie Webster in the show, as well as EastEnders stars Steve McFadden and Jacqueline Jossa and Emmerdale actress. Eden Taylor-Draper.
On the night, the gong went to Steve, who is famed for having played Phil Mitchell in the BBC One soap for more than 30 years, and it was his first-ever solo win at the long-running awards bash.
It was a busy year for Phil, whose battle with depression led him to check into a mental health facility after he attempted to take his own life during the programme’s 40th anniversary week.
Steve got teary-eyed as he delivered a poignant acceptance speech. “Thank you so much. For everybody that voted for me, I truly am grateful and very, very happy to receive this award,” he said. “Thank you to my fantastic cast over there. Generous, brilliant, stunning, wonderful cast. They are fantastic. Thank you to the audience for forgiving Phil Mitchell 35 years of stupidity…”
At the time, it was reported that Jack appeared to be ‘fuming’ to have lost out on the accolade, but now he’s cleared up why he may have looked less than impressed when he was broadcast to the nation live on ITV.
Revealing what actually happened on his podcast, On The Sofa, which he co-hosts with Ben Price and Colson Smith, Jack said: “They said my name first and there was no reaction.
“But then the next person was Steve McFadden and everyone goes mental. So everyone who’s nominated, you have cameras [facing you]. And then they went, ‘And the winner is…’’
“All the cameras turned away from me and went to Phil Mitchell. So it was like, there’s obviously not a camera on me, just to give you a clue that I’ve definitely not won this.”
The soap star went on: “My trick of the trade this week is the ‘loser’s face’, when you haven’t won the award,” he said. “What do you do?
“Do you graciously clap and go, ‘yep, well done’? Do you over-egg the pudding as though you’re pleased they’ve won and you’ve lost? Do you do the really p***** off face? Or the other one, to pretend not to be paying attention and laugh at some joke that someone has not made?”
“Usually I do the ‘massively p***** off’ look because it makes me laugh. But this year, because I had no camera on me, I didn’t do anything but they had a little sniper camera.
“So I was in shot and my reaction was ‘I’m just watching the NTAs’. I genuinely wasn’t p***** off.”
