It’s difficult to envy Coronation Street’s Carla Connor (Alison King) right now – every time her whirlwind love story with Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) starts to settle into grounded territory, something pretty massive knocks them askew all over again.
This time, it’s not a badly functioning kidney or a gun-toting brother but the classic late ex-wife back from the dead scenario. Typical.
While Lisa is adamant that Carla is the woman for her and always will be, despite the woman she previously loved coming back into her life like a wrecking ball, it’s difficult for the Underworld queen not to feel put out.
And she’s left with feelings of unease when well meaning Ryan (Ryan Prescott) issues a warning in coming scenes.
With the conflict still grinding on between Lisa and Becky (Amy Cudden), with Betsy’s (Sydney Martin) interests seemingly being their joint motive (I’m watching you Becky, I swear to God), Carla is caught in the middle and has so far managed to maintain a mature dignity of working with Lisa on the situation and coming from a place of understanding.
In fact, she was even the one who insisted to Lisa that she be honest with her daughter over her other mum not being as dead as they were led to believe.
Whether that comes back to bite her remains to be seen but it’s safe to say that any Swarla wedding planning continues to take a backseat while the pesky Alicante zombie situation is playing out.Becky reveals that she’s moving into a rented flat nearby, which is good news for all concerned, eh?When Betsy suggests Lisa could help her move her stuff, Lisa’s forced to go along with it. As they wait in the car together, having run out of fuel Becky discusses Carla and Lisa’s feelings for her.
Meanwhile, Carla tells Ryan that she trusts Lisa implicitly, but when Ryan wonders if she trusts Becky to the same degree, Carla masks her unease.
We feel you, Carla. Not sure I’d trust this one with my toenail clippings personally.
Ryan’s concerns playing on her mind, Carla later snaps when faced with Becky once more.
Becky quizzes Betsy about the last four years, hoping to make up for lost time but Betsy gets upset and hurries away. When Becky calls round, Carla asserts that it would be best for everyone if she went back to playing dead.
Ouch!
It’s not quite as simple as that, of course. Coronation Street is notably shy of a serial killer for now, and Carla and Lisa are probably best trying to work things out with Becky in a more reasonable fashion – at least for Betsy’s sake.
It’s a turbulent development and things won’t be easy for a while.
While you can be assured from this Swarla stanning writer that Carla and Lisa are strong enough to weather the storm eventually, there will come tests.
And that’s something Amy was also keen to warn when she joined the show as spanner in the works Becky, a role she is making delicious work of, it has to be said.
