Coronation Street fans ‘work out’ legend that’s getting killed off but it’s not Billy

The long-standing soap is no stranger to airing shocking deaths. Since its inception in 1960, numerous residents have met their untimely end on the famous cobbles.

However, recently, boss Iain MacLeod revealed that a beloved Weatherfield resident will meet their demise in the new year, as part of the historic crossover with Emmerdale set for early 2026.

Speaking ahead of the ITV show’s 65th anniversary in December, executive producer Iain told the Daily Star: “The soap gods demand a sacrifice when you have an event of this kind.”

He added: “Sometimes the biggest and best exits are for characters that you care the most about. It’s going to be shocking. There will be lots of trauma, drama and twists.”, reports the Daily Star.

Following Iain’s revelation, fans immediately began speculating about who will die. Some believe it could be Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), following reports in May that he is set to be killed off after more than a decade.

However, other fans are convinced that the character who will die is another soap legend: David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd).

On a Corrie Facebook fan page, reacting to producer Iain’s revelation about a legend getting killed off, one person said: “I’m thinking David.”

Another chimed in: “To be honest they said it would be shocking and that would be wouldn’t it? I don’t think anyone would expect it.” A third agreed: “I thought that too or maybe Audrey?”.

Earlier this year, the announcement of a historic crossover between Coronation Street and Emmerdale sent shockwaves through the soap world. For the first time in British soap history, an hour-long episode will see characters from both shows unite in a celebration of the genre.

The crossover episode with Emmerdale is predicted to draw in massive viewership. An ITV spokesperson revealed: “The distinctive worlds of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will merge for one night only in a ‘mash-up’ of our two favourite communities.

“The producers, scriptwriters and production teams have conceived an ingenious way of linking the two universes, but with characters then returning to the soaps they are renowned for inhabiting in Manchester and Yorkshire.”
