While it’s not uncommon to see successful television series get oodles of spinoffs, that’s almost always associated with long-running procedurals – especially when the spinoffs release not too distant from the mainline series. The Game of Thrones franchise might be on its prequel currently with other rumored spinoffs to come, but fans still find themselves waiting years at a time for something new.
Yellowstone has captured the hearts of millions of viewers, and, shockingly, its spinoffs maintain the original quality, which is, arguably, the hardest thing for spinoffs to do. This contemporary Western series has blown up since its release in 2018, but what makes Yellowstone stand out so much? For one, Yellowstone pays homage to country folk and rural living – considering most current television series are highly urbanized or completely fantastical, that’s already something that has allowed Yellowstone to reach more demographics.
As mentioned previously, 1883 has been praised for its cast and excellent acting. On top of that, the writing in 1883 has captivated fans more than Yellowstone ever did, with haunting scenes sticking with viewers long after. It’s only natural that fans were hoping for more of 1883, but there’s no point in risking ruining something already great. 1883 works perfectly as a miniseries and, seeing as it’s a prequel, it’s actually viable for anyone to watch, even if they’ve never seen the original series.
