Speaking during ‘An Audience with Coronation Street’ at Salford’s Lowry Theatre, he explained that he only found out by chance in a meeting. The writers had already agreed to “kill him off,” convinced that his string of bad behaviour left no way forward. He admitted the discovery came as a complete surprise, as the decision had been made without him knowing. In the eyes of the producers, David had gone too far, and it looked like the only option was to remove him from the show altogether.

A Scene That Saved the Coronation Street Character

Everything changed thanks to one crucial scene opposite Helen Worth, who plays Gail. The moment was written to be a typical soap clash, with David shouting, storming off, and slamming the door. Instead, Jack chose to play it differently. He explained that he delivered his lines calmly, showing that David truly believed what he was saying about Richard Hillman. That simple change in approach made the writers change their mind.

Jack said they suddenly saw his character in a new light. They realised David wasn’t just a troublemaker and that convinced them to rethink their plan and keep him alive on the cobbles.
