Jason Grimshaw seems to be hiding something when he returns to Coronation Street very soon.

Actor Ryan Thomas has hinted his character’s claims over why he heads back to the cobbles do not match his real agenda. The character, who left Weatherfield back in 2016, joins his mother Eileen Grimshaw back on the cobbles to support her during her time of need.

Following the death of her sister Julie Carp and the implications this has for her, Eileen is facing turmoil amid drama with her partner George Shuttleworth. But Jason is back, and it seems he’s there to comfort his mother.

But Ryan told The Mirror there’s also something going on with the character, with him having a different reason for wanting to be back on the street. It seems that while he’s keen to make it seem as though he’s there to support Eileen, in fact it’s him that needs “a cuddle”.

Jason is going through his own heartache, and his real reason for going home is to get some support from mum Eileen and his family. Of course he instead makes it seem he’s there to offer Eileen some help.

Ryan explained to us: “He’s struggling for money, his girlfriend left him, and he needs his mum. He says he’s come back for Eileen, but he really needs a cuddle and his safety net.”

Ryan’s comeback as Jason paves the way for Eileen’s exit from the show after more than two decades. Eileen actress Sue Cleaver announced she had quit the role in January, while she’d been thinking about it for a while.

A year ago she decided it was time to go and asked co-star and friend Ryan to return for her final storyline. While he had no plans to go back to the show, he couldn’t turn down her request knowing how much it meant to her, while it also meant a lot to him too.

With that Sue told bosses of her plans, and she was given the chance to share the perfect exit for her character – with Jason’s return a part of that. Ryan was recently back on the set for the first time in nine years, after his departure in 2016.

Sue’s final scenes as Eileen have been filmed, while details of her exit are being kept under wraps for the time being along with when she will leave. Ryan told The Mirror all about his emotional reason for returning after almost a decade away.

He said: “It was a mix of nostalgia and gratitude for what the show has done for me. When they told me Eileen was leaving, it felt right to be a part of that storyline for her and revisit where it all started.

“I have no regrets. It’s been the perfect storyline and a real memory I can cherish. It felt like the old days, we’ve all been in the canteen, having lunch together and I had real fun.”
