Coronation Street’s Sally Dynevor recently hailed her co-star as “incredible” in a heartfelt tribute.

During the Loose Women podcast, she praised Barbara Knox’s immense talent, who continues to be a constant force on Corrie even at 91.

Describing a recent encounter on set, Sally recalled: “She was in the other day and she is actually incredible, I mean she had a couple of scenes with lots of dialogue, she comes in, she does the work and she goes. I honestly admire her so much, to be still be working at 91, remembering lines and being as brilliant as she is..”

Known for her role as Sally Metcalfe in the show, she expressed her astonishment at having the chance to share the screen with Barbara: “Even now, when I’m in a scene with Barbara I’m suddenly like ‘is this real?’ She’s so good.”

Joining in praise was former co-star Denise Welch, who reminisced about Barbara’s unique style on set from back in the late ’90s: “Do you remember Barbara always wearing these amazing jumpers? And they’d always have some sort of motif or some big lapel and she always had loads of them.”

Denise recounted a comical moment involving Barbara’s wardrobe: “There was one day and we were sat in the green room and there was this huge massive sort truck outside and all of these boxes were coming off the back and I said to Roy Baraclough, who played Alec Gilroy ‘what is that noise’ and he said ‘don’t worry, it’s just Barbara’s sweater delivery.’ ”

Barbara Knox’s remarkable contribution to Coronation Street was celebrated by co-stars Sally and Denise, as she marked her 60th anniversary playing Rita Tanner on the iconic cobbles last year.

Barbara first appeared in Corrie in 1964, a mere four years after the show began, but her initial stint was brief, featuring in just a few episodes.

She made a permanent return to the soap eight years later and quickly became a regular face on the cobbles, sharing the screen with other Corrie legends such as William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow.

Barbara has recently celebrated another significant milestone, having reportedly signed a new contract ensuring her presence on the soap until 2026, which will include a pivotal role in the show’s 65th-anniversary celebrations this year.

A source speaking to the Mirror revealed: “Barbara secured her future on Coronation Street earlier this year and both her and show bosses are delighted fans will continue to see her on screen.”

They continued: “She still loves the show and everyone involved with it – and viewers want to see Rita at the Rovers and in the Kabin for years to come. It’s a win-win situation.”

Rumours suggest her new deal is worth £200,000 annually, positioning her among the top earners on the soap.
