EastEnders has confirmed the dissolution of Elaine and George Knight’s marriage, mere months after they exchanged vows, with the couple parting ways on Thursday (June 12).

This week saw Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) worn out by George’s (Colin Salmon) incessant deceit concerning his former wives. Upon discovering that George had been assisting Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) in reviving The Albert, she became suspicious of a possible affair.

The Queen Vic’s landlady also unearthed that George had paid a visit to his other ex-wife, Sabrina, on Christmas night, which left her seething.

While at The Albert, Elaine found company in a charming man named Stephen, leading to a one-night stand.

However, upon her return home, a remorseful George was eager to apologise and reconcile, leaving a guilt-ridden Elaine realising she was the only one who had strayed, reports Belfast Live.

As preparations for Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon’s (Shane Richie) wedding reception were underway, Elaine confided in Linda (Kellie Bright) about her tryst with Stephen. Encouraged by her daughter to confess to George, Elaine eventually admitted to her husband her infidelity.

In the most recent episode, George was left reeling from this revelation, leaving Elaine alone in the barrel store as he grappled with his wife’s betrayal.

Elaine wouldn’t accept full responsibility for the fallout, arguing that Stephen’s attentions made her feel prioritised, while George’s deceptions had caused her self-doubt.

She later proposed a fresh start in Marbella to George, but he felt it was too late, deciding to part ways and exiting The Vic with his possessions, despite being moved by Elaine’s thoughtful gesture of returning his first championship boxing gloves.

Nonetheless, viewers of EastEnders sense George had already set his sights on rekindling a past romance with Cindy, the two struggling to stay away from each other.

The backstory reveals Cindy married George under an alias while in witness protection, but abandoned him and their daughters in Spain after Lucy Beale’s demise in 2014.

Their serendipitous encounter in Walford this year raises questions about a potential reunion now that Elaine is no longer in the frame.

One viewer expressed frustration on social media: “If the end goal is to put George and Cindy together then why didn’t you do that ages ago? Why are we still being subjected to watch this nonsense?”.
