EastEnders finally exposes Johnny’s lie – but there’s an unexpected reaction

EastEnders spoilers follow for the latest episode to air on BBC One and stream on iPlayer.

EastEnders’ Johnny Carter recently lied to his on-again-off-again secret lover Callum Highway about his father’s last words. Callum’s alcoholic father Jonno died in Johnny arms, cruelly stating with his last breath that he was still ashamed of his son for being gay.

Johnny told Callum that his old man actually said he was proud of him, a decision he’s been regretting ever since, despite grandmother Elaine Peacock telling him that it wasn’t wrong to offer someone a comforting light in a dark time.

Tonight’s episode saw Johnny decide that he had to tell the truth. Upon hearing that, Callum was more angry at himself for being “stupid” and chasing his dad’s love even though he was never going to get it.

Johnny couldn’t accept Callum putting himself down, and told him that he was one of the kindest and best people he knew, and tried to say that he lied to Callum out of love, but couldn’t bring himself to say the word.

Elaine overheard the conversation and went to talk to Callum in the café, explaining that she knew Johnny would tell the truth “because he’s a good boy with a good heart”, which is why he and Callum are so suited.

“Don’t play coy,” she continued. “I’ve seen the way you look at each other. When you love someone, you’d do anything to take their pain away… He loves you, and you know it.

“Take it from me, don’t be too quick to throw love away, even when it hurts you.”

Callum returned to the Albert and told Johnny that “I’ve finally found someone who wants me to shine, and I’m not gonna throw that away” as he put his hand on Johnny’s leg.

It looks like the two are ready to commit, there’s just one big problem: Callum is still married to Ben Mitchell, and Ben is set to return next week for Jonno’s funeral!
