Simon Gregson, known for his iconic role as Steve McDonald on Coronation Street, has led a life full of unexpected twists both on and off the screen. While his character has been at the center of drama for over three decades, Gregson’s personal journey reveals a side of him that fans rarely get to see. Known for his love of cars and motorsports, Simon’s initial push to join the acting world was, surprisingly, rooted in his desire to buy a car.
Before his career as an actor took off, Simon had dreamed of joining the RAF, but a passion for a bright orange Ford Escort Mexico steered him towards auditioning for Coronation Street. As Simon tells it, he needed the money to buy his dream car, not knowing that his decision would lead to a career spanning over 36 years in one of Britain’s most beloved soaps.
Despite his role in the long-running series, Simon didn’t give up on his love for motorsports. He even dabbled in racing, pushing his talent to the limits as he competed against top cars like 911s and TVRs. However, his racing aspirations were cut short by contractual obligations with ITV, as they deemed motorsports too dangerous. Still, Simon reminisces fondly about the time he matched an instructor’s lap time at Oulton Park and even received an offer to race with Seat.
While Simon’s racing dreams were dashed, they paved the way for a journey that led him to Celebrity Deal or No Deal, where he’ll compete for charity. Alongside his motorsport interests, Simon’s life off-screen has been full of heartache and joy. Married to former Hollyoaks actress Emma Gleave, the couple has faced tremendous challenges, including Emma’s heartbreaking journey through 11 miscarriages and the loss of their baby girl at 21 weeks. Despite the struggles, they are parents to three children and have built a strong family life in Cheshire.
Through it all, Simon’s passion for cars and his remarkable resilience continue to define his journey, both as an actor and as a man. His story is a reminder that even those who appear to live the most dramatic lives on-screen often face hidden battles and triumphs in their personal lives.
