Kevin Costner’s Horizon Faces Major Setbacks: Production Halts, Legal Drama, and a Floundering Dream

“The ambitious dream of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is reportedly facing its toughest battle yet, far beyond the frontiers of the Old West. What was envisioned as a sprawling four-part epic, fueled by Costner’s own passion and personal fortune, is now reportedly mired in a series of disheartening updates and shocking controversies. A co-star has just dropped a bombshell, hinting at production halts and an uncertain future for the highly anticipated third installment. This isn’t just a movie facing hurdles; it’s a profound test of resolve for a Hollywood legend who staked everything on his grand vision, even turning his back on Yellowstone to see it through.”

Yellowstone‘s iconic Kevin Costner is reportedly powering ahead with his ambitious Horizon series, despite a range of significant challenges and controversies. Unfortunately, it looks like fans of the proposed four-part Western epic have a lengthy wait in store before the third installment even hits screens.

The journey for Horizon has been rocky from the start. The first entry in the saga proved to be a box office flop, a particularly sore blow given that Costner had reportedly put up a staggering $38 million of his own cash to finance the project. This financial setback was compounded when the sequel, Horizon: Chapter 2, was subsequently pulled from a theatrical release, leaving fans with “no clue” when they might be able to watch it. Co-star Glynn Turman admits he’s heard “not a thing” about its release.

Adding to the growing list of troubles, there have been serious allegations of sexual discrimination and harassment on the set of Horizon. A lawsuit from stunt performer Devyn LaBella claims she took part in a “violent unscripted, unscheduled rape scene”. Costner’s legal team has vehemently denied these claims, stating that the allegations have “absolutely no merit”.

In the wake of this swirling controversy and the first film’s underperformance, production on Horizon: Chapter 3 appears to be in further jeopardy. Cast member Glynn Turman, who portrays a role in the saga, admits he has no idea when he’ll be back on set. Filming on Part 3 had reportedly started, but Turman confessed to ScreenRant, “I don’t know if they’ve continued it,” and added, “I think there was a temporary shutdown and I don’t know if they went back”. This uncertainty from a key cast member paints a worrying picture for the future of the epic.

Despite the frustrating delays and mounting challenges, Turman remains supportive of Costner’s vision. He expressed his personal frustration about the unknown release dates, stating, “It’s kind of frustrating on my part, everybody’s part that’s connected”. However, he still praises the first film, believing “It takes us back to old-fashioned moviemaking and watching stories and Kevin is one of the best at doing that, so my hat’s off to him. What a bold move he made”.

The rocky beginnings of Horizon and Costner’s highly publicized divorce from Christine Baumgartner are widely credited as the primary reasons he reportedly turned his back on Yellowstone midway through its final season. This ambitious project, meant to be his passion, has evidently come at a significant personal and professional cost.

Opening up about his career trajectory with Entertainment Tonight, Costner reaffirmed his independent spirit: “I don’t mind going with the crowd, but if the crowd is not going where I want to go, I’m not really worried about going my other way…” He also expressed his deep desire to find a “mythical partner who would like to maybe make movies with me for the next ten years,” someone “who wants to make things that maybe stand the test of time”.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is currently available to stream on Netflix. Meanwhile, Yellowstone remains available on Paramount+.

Given the significant challenges and controversies surrounding Kevin Costner’s Horizon series, do you still hold out hope for its success? And what are your thoughts on his decision to pour so much personal effort and finance into this project, even at the cost of his Yellowstone role?
