After months of speculation and swirling rumors, NBC has finally pulled back the curtain on which familiar faces will be returning to its powerhouse One Chicago franchise this fall. The long-running trio — Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D. — has become a weekly ritual for millions of viewers, and with Season 13 of P.D., Season 12 of Med, and Season 13 of Fire all set to premiere later this year, fans have been eagerly awaiting confirmation on who’s coming back — and who’s not.
The most headline-grabbing return is none other than Jason Beghe, who will once again step into the role of Sergeant Hank Voight for Chicago P.D. Season 13. As the franchise’s most iconic and morally complex figure, Beghe’s return was widely expected — but NBC made it official with an early announcement, emphasizing his central role in what is shaping up to be a darker, more character-driven season.
NBC also confirmed the return of Marina Squerciati (Kim Burgess) and LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin Atwater) — both of whom had been the subject of exit rumors after last season’s emotionally intense arcs. While Squerciati has not yet signed on for the entire season, she is expected to appear in at least half of the episodes, according to sources close to production. After taking time off during Season 11, Taylor Kinney is officially returning full-time as Kelly Severide in Chicago Fire Season 13. This is arguably one of the most anticipated returns in recent One Chicago memory, as Kinney’s absence left a noticeable void — both in terms of story and screen presence.
Severide’s marriage to Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) had been left in a precarious state last season, and his return opens the door to resolving that emotional cliffhanger. Kinney’s character has long been the emotional and tactical center of Firehouse 51, and fans are eager to see how he reintegrates into the team after his extended absence. In addition to Kinney, Chicago Fire will welcome back Miranda Rae Mayo (Stella Kidd), David Eigenberg (Christopher Herrmann), and Kara Killmer (Sylvie Brett), who will return for what sources say will be a “farewell arc.” Killmer’s contract is reportedly up this season, and while she may not return beyond Season 13, her character will be given a “meaningful and emotional sendoff.”
Chicago Med will see the return of S. Epatha Merkerson (Sharon Goodwin), Nick Gehlfuss (Dr. Will Halstead), and Marlyne Barrett (Maggie Lockwood), although the latter will reportedly have a lighter workload as she continues recovery from her real-life health battle. Notably, Dominic Rains (Dr. Crockett Marcel) is still in negotiations, and his future on the show remains uncertain. With rumors swirling of a potential time-jump and shift in focus toward newer doctors, fans are bracing for changes in the dynamic at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. NBC is expected to introduce at least two new characters in Med — younger residents who will serve as entry points for fresh storylines.
