Kayce Dutton on the phone in Yellowstone Season 5
Sheridan’s time, however, has not been solely focused on Yellowstone. In fact, he’s one of the busiest writers in Hollywood, and Sheridan has 10 movies and shows on Paramount+ alone. Many of his shows have found massive success on their own – Landman even beat Yellowstone’s viewership, for example – but none of them have been able to match Yellowstone in one key area. Sylvester Stallone’s Tulsa King will be the first show created by Sheridan that isn’t connected to Yellowstone to get a spinoff show of its own.
NOLA King Is Taylor Sheridan’s First TV Spinoff Outside The Yellowstone Universe
Tulsa King Is The Only Sheridan Show To Get A Spinoff Besides Yellowstone
Kevin Costner as John Dutton in Yellowstone
An upcoming Tulsa King spinoff starring Samuel L. Jackson will mark the first time one of Taylor Sheridan’s shows other than Yellowstone created a spinoff series. Jackson is set to appear in Tulsa King season 3 and then star in a new spinoff show titled NOLA King, which takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. While Sheridan isn’t very involved in Tulsa King anymore – he only created the pilot, while Dave Erickson is acting as showrunner for season 3 – it is the first time one of his creations other than Yellowstone is turning into a verifiable franchise.
All of Sheridan’s other shows are either tied into Yellowstone or act as their own original projects. Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 all tell the story of the Dutton family and their fight to control their ranch. Shows like Landman, Lioness, and Mayor of Kingstown, however, are all standalone series that have never had spinoffs of their own. It’s the first step to making Tulsa King into a franchise, and the first step to another Taylor Sheridan show rivaling Yellowstone in terms of sheer scope and size.

Tulsa King’s TV Universe Can Be Just As Expansive As Yellowstone
Tulsa King Has So Much Potential To Become A Franchise As Large As Yellowstone
It’s honestly not very surprising that Tulsa King was the first non-Yellowstone show to get a spinoff of its own. There’s so much room to expand the world of Tulsa King and Dwight Manfredi’s story that it just makes sense to turn it into a franchise. Chickie already set up a way for Tulsa King to become a franchise at the end of Tulsa King season 2: Dwight could expand his operation to set up gangs in cities across the United States. Alternatively, spinoff shows can follow any one of Tulsa King’s colorful crime kingpins in their own exploits, which is what NOLA King is already starting to do.
Tulsa King could even do prequel shows like Yellowstone has been doing. We know almost nothing about Dwight’s early life and his career as a mobster before he was arrested, and there could easily be a Tulsa King show about his rise to power in New York. Samuel L. Jackson’s character could get the same treatment if NOLA King turns into a major success. There are also so many other interesting characters played by big celebrities – from Frank Grillo’s Bill Bevilaqua to Neal McDonough’s Cal Thresher – that there’s basically an unlimited amount of material for Tulsa King to spin off.
In a few years time, Tulsa King may be just as big – if not bigger – than Yellowstone is right now. Much of it will depend on some key moments, such as NOLA King’s viewership and Tulsa King season 3’s story, but there’s plenty of potential. Taylor Sheridan may not be directly involved with Tulsa King anymore, but there’s plenty of room for him to take control over his own spinoff show and find his long-awaited Yellowstone replacement.
