The Yellowstone Ending Explained and What to Know About the Epic Spin-Off

yellowstone

After five seasons, the neo-Western TV series Yellowstone has come to an end with an epic two-hour finale.

ICYMI, the series followed the story of the Dutton family, who control the largest ranch in the US. It starred Kelly Reilly, Kevin Costner, Taylor Sheridan, Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, and many more amazing actors over the years, and we’re sad to see it go.

In the lead-up to the show’s finale, we saw one of John Dutton’s sons, Jamie, and his girlfriend pay an agency to kill John and make it look like suicide. Their plan was to then sell the family ranch.

But another problem arose—the siblings (including Beth and Kayce, who are at this point “at war” with Jamie for what he did) cannot pay the inheritance tax on the ranch.

Here’s what you need to know about the Yellowstone ending, including the spin-off that’s already in the works.

The Yellowstone ending explained

The final episode of Yellowstone’s season five—titled “Life Is a Promise”—shows the funeral of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the family’s patriarch.

Beth keeps her promise to avenge her father’s death, grabbing some weapons after the funeral and heading to Jamie’s house. The two siblings get into a bloody fight, with Rip (Cole Hauser) showing up to help Beth, who manages to stab Jamie and kill him. There’s something of a full-circle Yellowstone ending, with Jamie being buried in the chasm where other bodies had been disposed of.

Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) and Rip burn Jamie’s car and make the crime scene look as if Jamie knocked Beth out and fled, and is now on the run.

Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his family come up with a way to save the ranch, selling it to Native American chieftan Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation for the same price that was paid for it when it was sold to the Duttons by the party who stole it from the Native Americans. Another full-circle moment. There is also a sale condition that states nothing is to ever be built on the ranch nor can it be sold again. Kayce also settles with his son Tate on the old side of the valley, where they will become cattle ranchers. Meanwhile, Beth and Rip move away.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan also appears in the finale as horse trainer Travis Wheatley.

Will there be a Yellowstone spin-off?

There will be indeed! Deadline recently confirmed that Sheridan will work on it, and it will center around Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). We imagine the spin-off will be based in their new ranch outside of Dillion, Montana, where they relocated at the end of Yellowstone. We even got a glimpse of their new ranch in the final moments of the series. Other cast members are set to be featured as well.

So it’s not really over for Yellowstone—not just yet.
