Yellowstone Spinoff Moves Franchise Away From Montana Ranch

Beth and Rip in Yellowstone

News about the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff surrounding Beth and Rip marks the end of an era for the Western franchise. Yellowstone’s 2024 ending marked the conclusion of Taylor Sheridan’s flagship series, but the world of the Duttons will go on with multiple spinoffs. These will follow surviving Duttons, past Duttons, and new characters set in the same world.

The most exciting of these spinoffs is The Dutton Ranch, a sequel series focused on Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton. Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly will reprise their roles, picking up on the two fan favorite characters following the original show’s ending, which saw them moving to a new, smaller home with their adopted son.

However, rather than filming the Yellowstone sequel in Montana, maintaining consistency with the original series, The Dutton Ranch will be filmed in Ferris, Texas. This is the first time the franchise will not be filmed, even partially, in the state of Montana.

The Yellowstone Franchise Is Moving On From The Original Dutton Ranch

While the sale of the Yellowstone Ranch in the original series marked the end of the Duttons’ ownership of that land, it seemed like the subsequent shows would at least be local. Given the information we know about The Dutton Ranch, it seems like the new show will be set in Texas.

Likewise, the Kayce Dutton spinoff, Y: Marshals, is set in Montana but will be filmed in Utah. The Madison, which is focused on new characters, was primarily filmed in Texas, but also had production in the Madison River valley, though the locations are new to the series. The long-planned 6666 spinoff would also be in Texas.

This is a notable shift, with so many spinoffs in the works and almost all of them moving to Texas or, at least, being filmed outside Montana. The early seasons of Yellowstone were filmed in Utah, so it’s possible Y: Marshals will resemble the original the most. The Madison is still in Montana, but there are no Duttons in the cast.

Will We See The Yellowstone Ranch Again?

While we’ll likely see the Dutton Ranch at some point in the future, it’s shifting away from being the primary focus of the franchise now after several years. Even the first two spinoffs, 1883 and 1923, were set there, exploring the origins of the ranch.

While the Yellowstone franchise once felt confined to the story of a singular plot of land, Taylor Sheridan is evidently expanding his stories to reach further out. We saw plenty of Texas in the original show’s final seasons, but now it seems like it will be more prominent in the franchise’s future.
